Advocacy Officer, Volunteer

About the role

The Advocacy Officer will work under the supervision of the Advocacy Officer and Deputy Director. The work of the Advocacy Officer will focus on advocating for a more equitable European asylum process.

  • Discussion and cooperation with non-governmental organisation related to European and Greek asylum law and policy
  • Preparation of reports on human, fundamental and procedural rights violations in Lesvos
  • Submission of applicants to the European Court of Human Rights pursuant to Rules 39 and 47

About Fenix

Fenix – Humanitarian Legal Aid is a US non-profit organization and Greek MKO, federally registered with Greece’s Ministry of Migration and Asylum.

Our multidisciplinary team of lawyers, protection officers, legal assistants, translators, psychologists and experts from different academic backgrounds, provides legal aid, protection and psychosocial services to refugees and asylum seekers on Lesvos, while advocating for a more just and equitable asylum system.

What we are looking for:

  • Fluent in English. Other languages are an asset (French, Arabic, Farsi/Dari, Greek).
  • Academic background in Law; either as a graduated or advanced law student
  • Experience in Human Rights, immigration or European Law is a great asset
  • Strong interest in and commitment to human rights principles and values
  • Strong computer skills
  • High professional ethics
  • Positive and professional attitude, including ability to work in a team setting and under pressure
  • Ability to conduct sessions with cultural mediators

The successful candidate must be an excellent communicator, a cooperative, respectful team player, and have the ability to multitask and prioritize in a constantly shifting context.
