About Fenix

Fenix – Humanitarian Legal Aid is a US non-profit organization and Greek MKO, federally registered with Greece’s Ministry of Migration and Asylum.

Our multidisciplinary team of lawyers, protection officers, legal assistants, translators, psychologists and experts from different academic backgrounds, provides legal aid, protection and psychosocial services to refugees and asylum seekers on Lesvos, while advocating for a more just and equitable asylum system.

About the role

Under the supervision of the Operations Coordinator, the cultural mediator will be responsible to provide in-person interpretation in one-on-one legal consultations, protection assessments, mental health assessments and group information sessions. The translator is also required to accompany other Fenix members; to translate and ensure cultural sensitivity in different working locations.

  • Assist the Protection, Legal, and Mental Health and Psychosocial support team in communicating with their clients, ensuring cultural sensitivity and the accuracy of translated content to convey original meaning and tone.
  • Translation of messages and official documentations.
  • Simultaneous interpretation during legal sessions and protection assessments.
  • Proofread translated texts for grammar, spelling and punctuation accuracy.
  • Consults and follow up with internal team members to ensure translation needs are met and to understand texts and translate them appropriately.
  • All Fenix team members must comply with the values and principles outlined in the Fenix code of conduct and Policies.

What we are looking for

  • Professional proficiency in written and spoken (Native or C1) in one or more of the following languages: Farsi / Dari, Somali, Arabic, Krio, Amharic, French, Lingala.
  • Fluency in English language (Native or C1).
  • Excellent proofreading skills.
  • Time-management skills.
  • Cultural sensitivity.
  • Working experience in the humanitarian field is an asset.
  • Positive and professional attitude, including ability to work in a team setting and under pressure.
