About Fenix

Fenix – Humanitarian Legal Aid is a US non-profit organization and Greek MKO, federally registered with Greece’s Ministry of Migration and Asylum.

Our multidisciplinary team of lawyers, protection officers, legal assistants, translators, psychologists and experts from different academic backgrounds, provides legal aid, protection and psychosocial services to refugees and asylum seekers on Lesvos, while advocating for a more just and equitable asylum system.

About the role

Under supervision of the Head of Holistic Legal Aid and in close coordination with the Legal and MHPSS teams, and other relevant actors in Athens, the Protection Assistant will support the implementation of Fenix’s protection objectives and activities.

  • Conduct vulnerability assessments, so as to identify social, legal, psychosocial, mental health, socio-economic and administrative needs of the clients and/or support related interventions, ensuring that clients’ safety, needs and wishes are centralised within any actions taken
  • Maintain a strong overview of protection issues and trends relating to the context
  • Compile referrals to other actors, where necessary, to refer clients to services available on the island and the mainland
  • Advocate for and support clients to access services and attend appointments
  • Maintain an oversight of services provided and available to clients
  • Collect and compile documentation to support the clients’ case (both protection and legal), ensuring that documentation is translated, scanned and uploaded appropriately in line with Fenix's case management system
  • Collaborate with the rest of the team to exchange information and ensure that Fenix's programs are responding to the evolving needs of affected populations
  • Work with Cultural Mediators in a way that is empowering to clients, but which is also maximising the Cultural Mediators experience and knowledge

What we are looking for

  • Fluency in spoken and writtenEnglish. Other languages (French, Arabic, Farsi/Dari, Somali, Greek) are a strong asset
  • Academic background or professional experience in social work, social science or other relevant field will be considered as a strong advantage
  • Experience with working in a case holding setting would be an advantage
  • Experience with face to face field work with asylum seekers and affected populations is desirable
  • Strong professional ethics
  • Positive and professional attitude, including ability to work in a team setting and under pressure
  • Experience with working with cultural mediators is an asset
  • Able to self-sponsor their stay - Fenix cannot offer any form of financial compensation
