For the past five years, I worked at the university of Leuven as a human rights law researcher and lecturer, focusing on migration, minority rights and detention. Before, I supported different NGO's, including Flemish Refugee Action (Brussels) and the Center for Popular Democracy (New York).
Recently, the public's attention has been drawn away from Lesvos and the Aegean, because of humanitarian crises elsewhere. I wanted to get involved with Fenix Humanitarian Legal Aid, to make sure that the situation of people stuck in Greece, or arriving there, still gets the attention it deserves. As an Advocacy Officer, I want to support Fenix and its partners in their attempts to put pressure on governments, so that asylum procedures and detention conditions improve. In addition, I want to help them protect those working in the field, so that they can continue doing their crucial work, despite an increasingly hostile context.
