About Fenix

Fenix’s vision is that every person who has been forced to flee has real and dignified access to the right to asylum. Our mission consists of interconnected projects, aimed at positively impacting the cases of people who seek safety, other actors providing support to asylum seekers, and the Greek and European asylum systems at large. All our work is underpinned by our holistic philosophy, providing tools for empowerment with an integrated, trauma-informed and person-centred approach that considers the general well-being, needs, skills and hopes of individuals in their search for safety.

About the role

Every individual has the right to live in safety and freedom, and to seek protection elsewhere if they face persecution and violence in their country of origin. In the EU, this fundamental right has become increasingly inaccessible due to years of policies and practices designed to erode fair, effective, and humane asylum systems. These measures have created substantial obstacles for those seeking recognition as refugees and a safe place to rebuild their lives. Working closely with the entire Fenix team, and under the guidance of the Head of Programs and Legal Coordinator, the services the lawyer will provide relate to four of Fenix’ projects:

Legal Empowerment
  • Deliver group legal empowerment sessions ahead of the first asylum interview, for subsequent applications and family reunification inside the CCAC on Lesvos
  • Offer drop-in consultations for people who seek asylum to support with individual questions
  • Offer follow up for people with additional challenges within the system, through check-ins, referrals
  • Based on context, need, and capacity, conduct one-on-one interview preparation sessions for individuals facing additional barriers in the asylum process.
  • Regularly review session content so it is up to date with changing laws, policies and regulations.
  • Proactively identify areas for improvement and provide recommendations to the Head of Program.
Holistic Legal Representation
  • Represent clients at all instances of the asylum procedure (including family reunification) and before domestic and international courts with a trauma-informed approach focused on empowerment.
    • In close collaboration with Fenix’ SOGIESC team, provide holistic case management, including representation for individuals whose claim is based on persecution because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
    • Other cases Fenix works with are: survivors of sexual violence / torture, individuals facing (mental) health challenges, unaccompanied minors, and survivors of trafficking.
  • Provide legal representation in case of criminalisation
  • Work closely with Fenix team members to offer a holistic approach to legal aid
  • Collaborate with Fenix Legal Coordinator towards effective legal strategies for each case
Human Rights Monitoring and Advocacy
  • Represent Fenix in selected external meetings.
  • Assist in drafting and supporting pre-approved advocacy efforts, including reports, statements, and policy briefs.
  • Undertake / support with Strategic Litigation cases towards relevant local and international courts and other bodies
  • Monitor and provide contextual updates to enhance the team’s knowledg.
  • Actively contribute to brainstorming sessions and Human Rights Monitoring to identify emerging advocacy opportunities.
Capacity Bridging
  • Conduct training sessions about the asylum procedure for other NGOs upon assignment by the HoP
  • Offer training to Fenix team members
General aspects:
  • Where needed, support with operational needs, such as donor visits, logistics, and space maintenance
  • Ensure compliance with and contribute to all Fenix' internal administrative and Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) processes

Fenix prides itself for always adapting to the changing context and needs, and tasks may change during the time of the agreement.
