Inhumane Deportation Rules Should be Rejected

Download Full Article

On 11 March, the European Commission unveiled its so-called “Return Regulation.”
Behind the euphemism lies a punitive Deportation Regulation that expands detention, allows deportations to countries people have no connection with or never set foot in, promotes racial profiling and the targeting of racialised communities, and creates lucrative new markets for private contractors in detention and surveillance.

It is built on the flawed goal of “increasing return rates,” while artificially inflating deportation orders. This will push more people into irregularity and legal limbo, denying them healthcare and basic rights, and exposing them to destitution, homelessness, exploitation, or prolonged detention

Over 200 civil society organisations across Europe are united in calling for its rejection. Deportation cannot be the cornerstone of migration policy. Communities need protection, housing, healthcare and education, not surveillance and fear.

We urge the Commission to withdraw the proposal, and the European Parliament and Council to reject this Regulation and to invest instead in policies that uphold dignity, strengthen inclusion, and allow all people to live safely regardless of status.
